Dependence

My name is Joseph Norman. I am a designer wanting to explore the intricate relationship between humans and objects that we surround ourselves with. My inspiration emerges from a fascination of the interdependence that exists between humans and their environments, particularly focusing on furniture. I feel that as humans, we depend on furniture heavily throughout our lives but never realise its prevalence. This has inspired me to create a piece that shines a spotlight on this co-dependence, so we can truly appreciate the things we overlook day to day. I am frequently using plywood in my practice; however, I am open to all materials if I feel them to be necessary to come to a resolution. I often work through making models rapidly with few changes each time. I believe that you need to be handling materials more than sketching ideas on paper, as many times I’ve come to realise, what you think will work on paper may not work when obeying real laws of physics. I enjoy my practice when using wood as it’s a malleable material that can be experimented with to create many different outcomes. My artistic vision is to one day have my own work shown in exhibitions, making exclusive bespoke furniture pieces. People that have inspired me to head down this path are furniture designers such as Gareth Neal, with his fusion of traditional craft and modern technology and Max Lamb with his exploration of furniture through process driven methods. Enjoy my work. If you want to get in touch to discuss further you can send me a message via @josephnorman_ on Instagram.
